Emirates’ Dubai hub to receive 300,000 gallons of SAF in agreement with Shell

Emirates airline has entered into an agreement with Shell Aviation, securing a supply of over 300,000 gallons of blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for its operations at Dubai International Airport.

The initial delivery of this environmentally sustainable fuel is expected to commence by the end of the year, marking the first-ever use of this fuel type through the DXB airport’s fueling system. Emirates will monitor the delivery and usage data of SAF through Avelia, a pioneering blockchain-powered SAF solution platform developed by Shell Aviation and Accenture, with support from Energy Web and American Express Global Business Travel.

Through the Avelia platform, Emirates will acquire both the physical fuel and the associated environmental attributes, contributing to the reduction of its Scope 1-related emissions. The environmental attributes linked to the same physical SAF will be purchased by Shell Corporate Travel to support the decarbonization of its business travel.

This collaboration demonstrates how book and claim solutions, like Avelia, can enable airlines and corporations to share the environmental benefits of SAF, according to a statement.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates airline, expressed pride in partnering with Shell to introduce SAF supply in Dubai and utilizing the Avelia platform to offer business travelers the flexibility to align with sustainability goals and reduce their environmental footprint during travel. He also expressed hope that this partnership would lead to a consistent supply of SAF in the Emirates’ hub, as there are currently no SAF production facilities in the UAE.

SAF can be blended with traditional jet fuel at a ratio of up to 50%, resulting in aviation fuel with significantly lower lifecycle carbon emissions. In its pure form, SAF can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

Chu Yong-Yi, Vice-President of Shell Corporate Travel, emphasized the significance of enabling SAF supply at DXB for the first time and its role in advancing progress on SAF in the aviation industry in the UAE and the broader region.

Emirates has previously conducted the first 100% SAF-powered demonstration flight in the region and operated SAF-blended flights since 2017. This latest agreement with Shell represents a milestone in their commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable aviation practices.
