Saudi Arabia has launched its first autonomous air taxi service using EHang’s EH216-S pilotless eVTOL aircraft to transport Hajj pilgrims. This aircraft, claimed to be the world’s first air taxi licensed by a civil aviation authority, made its debut flight in Mecca on June 12 with special approval from the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).
The event, organized in collaboration with EHang’s local partner Front End, marks a significant step towards gaining market approval in Saudi Arabia. Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of GACA, highlighted the trial as a major advancement in integrating Advanced Air Mobility solutions into the nation’s aviation landscape.
This trial follows a similar demonstration in Abu Dhabi, showcasing the EH216-S along with other EHang models for firefighting and logistics. EHang aims to start commercial services in Saudi Arabia, pending GACA’s validation of its type certificates. The EH216-S, which received Chinese certification in October 2023, is the first type-certified unmanned eVTOL, allowing for commercial passenger operations.
Saleh Al-Jasser, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, emphasized the project’s alignment with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to create a ‘Connected Kingdom’ and fostering regional growth opportunities.
The EH216-S can transport two people with a maximum cargo capacity of 485 pounds (220 kilograms). Its compact size and collapsible limbs make it ideal for urban use, capable of reaching speeds up to 80 mph (130 kph).
