Unveiling Saudi’s Future MRO Operations: A Conversation with Dr. Rainer Fink, VP of Powerplant at Saudia Technic

In a dynamic interview with Dr. Rainer Fink, VP of Powerplant at Saudia Technic conducted by Megha Mary Mathews, Editor of Aviation 360 magazine, we delve into the transformative impact of the newly established MRO village in Jeddah and the innovative strategies driving its success. Dr. Fink, a leading figure in the aviation industry, sheds light on the significance of the MRO village and its pivotal role in shaping the future of maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations. With a focus on comprehensive services, local economic empowerment, and strategic partnerships, the MRO village represents a beacon of progress in the ever-evolving landscape of aviation maintenance. Let’s explore the insights shared by Dr. Fink on this groundbreaking initiative and its broader implications for the industry.
Could you discuss the significance of establishing the MRO village in Jeddah and highlight the importance of your strategy?
“Certainly. Our strategy revolves around offering comprehensive maintenance services, covering everything from aircraft engines to auxiliary power units (APUs). The MRO village in Jeddah is pivotal in this regard as it consolidates various services into a one-stop-shop model. We’re proud to call it “MRO plus” because it not only encompasses traditional maintenance but also extends to consulting and digital services for airlines. This initiative ensures that we can cater to all aspects of aircraft and engine maintenance efficiently.”
What advantages does the MRO Village offer to the local economy?
“Establishing the MRO village in Jeddah has numerous benefits for the local economy. Firstly, it fosters job creation by providing employment opportunities for a significant portion of the workforce, with a focus on Saudization. Our Saudization rate stands at 80%, meaning we have only 20% expatriates, a stark contrast to other MROs in the Middle East where expatriates make up 80%.
By emphasizing skill development through local training programs and international collaborations, we’re contributing to a more diverse and capable workforce. Furthermore, the operational efficiency of the aviation industry in the kingdom is enhanced, aligning with broader economic goals of transitioning away from hydrocarbons towards sustainable industries like aviation.”
How does the recent inauguration of the Jet Propulsion Center set the course for the industry?
“The Jet Propulsion Center, inaugurated in December 2023, marks a significant milestone for the industry. Unlike traditional MRO facilities that grow incrementally, our center was purpose-built to accommodate high volumes of engine repairs efficiently. With streamlined processes and state-of-the-art equipment, we can handle up to 300 engine repairs annually. This optimized setup positions us as a leader in the region, offering unmatched capabilities and setting a new standard for MRO operations.”
What is your outlook on the MRO industry?
“The future of the MRO industry lies in digitalization and automation. We’re committed to leveraging technology to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall maintenance experience. From automated measurement processes to augmented reality training for mechanics, we’re embracing innovative solutions to stay ahead of the curve. As a newly established but experienced player in the industry, we’re uniquely positioned to lead the way in shaping the future of MRO operations.”
What opportunities and challenges have you encountered at the MRO show, and how do you plan to address them?
“As the “new kid on the block,” we’re experiencing rapid growth and attracting interest from suppliers and partners. This presents exciting opportunities for expansion and collaboration. However, managing this growth while maintaining quality standards and Saudization targets poses its challenges. We’re actively addressing these challenges through strategic hiring, process optimization, and fostering partnerships with reputable industry players. Our focus remains on sustainable growth and delivering exceptional service to our clients.”
Could you share your recent partnerships and expansion plans?
“We’re proud to announce recent partnerships with Honeywell and GE, solidifying our position as a trusted offload center for their products. These agreements mark significant milestones in our expansion plans, enabling us to offer a broader range of services and attract more clients. Additionally, we’re exploring opportunities to expand our engine testing capabilities and further enhance our MRO offerings. Our commitment to excellence and innovation drives us to continually seek new partnerships and expand our operations.”
