Sustainable Aviation Takes Priority in the Middle East Amid Efforts to Reduce Carbon Footprint
The Middle East’s business aviation sector, traditionally focused on luxury and comfort, is increasingly prioritizing environmental sustainability, according to Mohammed Al Husary, executive president of UAS International Trip Support. The COP28 conference in Dubai last year showcased a serious commitment to decarbonization, with the UAE alone pledging over $840 million for renewable energy investments.
UAS CEO Omar Hosari attended the third Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAFF/3) with the International Business Aviation Council delegation, highlighting the region’s active interest in sustainable aviation. “Sustainable aviation will remain a high priority, not just for the region but globally. We hope to see more investment in biofuels production and carbon offsetting programs,” said Al Husary.
The global aviation industry is looking to Middle East companies, particularly in Saudi Arabia, to lead in the production and distribution of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Al Husary noted that while private aviation in the Middle East is seen as an economic booster rather than an environmental burden, the industry’s investment in sustainability positions it as a leader in eco-friendly travel.
There is widespread agreement on the need for global production and distribution of SAF. Al Husary urged regional oil companies to invest in SAF research and development to make it affordable for users, predicting massive demand if SAF becomes accessible and affordable. He emphasized the business community’s commitment to achieving carbon-neutral growth.
New airport infrastructure is expected to be a significant focus in 2024. Rumors at the Corporate Jet Investor Dubai conference indicated that the Dubai government’s $35 billion expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport could impact business aviation, with potential relocation to Dubai International Airport. “Investment in airport infrastructure and facilities is high on the agenda, reflecting the region’s role as a hub for business and tourism,” Al Husary said.
UAS has been investing in its ground network across the Middle East, Africa, China, and other regions to enhance service standards for clients worldwide. “Our support doesn’t stop in the air; it continues throughout our clients’ journeys. We view challenges as opportunities,” Al Husary concluded, emphasizing UAS’s commitment to making travel simpler and more efficient for its clientele.
