In order to offer in-flight medical aid training, Taiwan’s premium airline STARLUX Airlines has teamed with MedAire, a leading provider of in-flight medical and aviation security solutions.

In addition to extensive training on the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), Passenger Fit-to-Fly assistance, and MedLink in-flight medical support are all included in the cooperation.

The partnership originally commenced in December 2022 with in-person meetings and workshops in Taipei, where MedAire demonstrated its ability to meet STARLUX’s needs and improve operational efficiency.

In addition, MedAire’s ACAA/CRO Train-the-Trainer program was instrumental in preparing STARLUX for the recent launch of its Taipei-Los Angeles route.

Medical issues arising during commercial airline flights are a relatively rare occurrence, but they can be potentially serious and even life-threatening.

In general, airlines traditionally take a number of steps to counter the potential problem of medical issues arising during commercial airline flights. These steps include:

Training flight crews in first aid and CPR: Flight crews are trained in first aid and CPR so that they can best assist passengers who experience a medical emergency during a flight.

Carrying medical supplies: Airlines carry a variety of medical supplies on board their flights, including bandages, gauze, and medications. These supplies can be used to treat minor injuries or illnesses that passengers may experience during a flight.

Having a medical emergency plan: Airlines have a medical emergency plan in place in case a passenger experiences a serious medical emergency during a flight. This plan outlines the steps that the flight crew will take to aid the passenger and to get them the medical attention they need.

Long haul flight operations bring a set of further considerations, with an obvious factor being the greater travel distances required to convey a passenger to medical facilities, should this action be warranted.

The preparedness for first responders, typically being an airline’s cabin and flight crew complement, becomes a consideration which is woven into the carrier’s risk management and operational framework.
