Dubai’s grandiose plans to build the biggest airport in the world are gaining steam once more as the city maintains its status as a major international aviation center.
The city’s Al Maktoum International Airport, according to urban master developer Dubai South, will grow to be the biggest airport in the world once it is finished.
“#DubaiSouth will be home to the world’s largest airport once complete, and a multi-modal transport infrastructure linking air, land, and sea,” Dubai South said on Twitter, adding that in addition to the advantages of a business-friendly free zone, the project will also provide a diverse range of residential options.
Originally inaugurated in 2010 for cargo operations and later in 2013 for passenger operations, the airport is a massive development valued at $33 billion (AED120 billion).
Al Maktoum International intends to surpass all other airports in the world in terms of passenger volume by the year 2050, with a capacity of up to 255 million.
The initial phase, which is slated to be finished by 2030, will increase the airport’s capacity to 130 million passengers annually, a tremendous accomplishment that is anticipated to have a substantial impact on Dubai’s economy.
With a 56 square kilometer total project size, there will be plenty of room for development and growth.
The global epidemic has prevented the initiative from moving forward. However, the prospects for expansion have significantly improved, and the project has been restarted. With traffic numbers increasing, Dubai International Airport (DXB) handling 66.1 million passengers in 2022, and the city projected to welcome nearly 78 million passengers this year with a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels forecast for 2024.
Concourse 1 and the West Terminal building are part of a $2.7 billion substructure contract for the project, which also entails developing the airport’s tunnels, baggage systems, road system, and support facilities.
