Collins Aerospace And NATS Partners to Explore Aviation Data with AI

Collins Aerospace and NATS, the top provider of ATC services in the UK, announced last week that they were joining forces to create next-generation air traffic management (ATM) solutions to boost the efficiency of the world aviation system. To enhance the management and flow of air traffic, the data-centric approach will make use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics.

ATC’s main job is to coordinate the efficient and safe movement of aircraft through the airspace and to keep an eye on any conditions that might affect aircraft operations. This is currently managed by human individuals. Even while mistakes can occasionally happen, the vast majority of the time they are working in a highly complex setting and performing an excellent job.

But, as the sector continues to flourish following the epidemic bump in the sky, the number of planes in the air will continue to increase. The current systems cannot handle the increased demands as they currently stand due to ATM issues with outdated technology, which are already causing significant delays.

Aviation is still lagging behind other industries in embracing the power of the “new oil,” but it is only now starting to understand how to make the most of the vast amounts of data available to it.

For instance, optimization of flight routes has the potential to reduce fuel burn and lower overall emissions, as well as reduce delays and disruptions. Furthermore, this will also keep airline costs down, which, in extension, keeps ticket prices from rising. AI can also assist with demand predictions, optimizing sectorization, and monitoring weather patterns.

According to a recent report, the market for artificial intelligence in aviation is set to grow to close to $1.9 billion by 2027. This can be compared to just under $390 million in 2021. The growth will be driven to a large extent by an increase in demand from airlines for AI-based virtual assistants, smart maintenance, manufacturing support, training, surveillance, flight ops, and dynamic pricing. However, providers are sure to see more and more ATM agencies on their list of customers as well.
