Aviation Leaders Gather in Dubai for IATA’s 80th Annual General Meeting

In a recent press release by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it was announced that global airline industry leaders will convene in Dubai, UAE, for the 80th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit (June 2-4, 2024). This is the first time the event is being held in the UAE, hosted by Emirates Airline. Over 1,500 participants, including industry leaders, government officials, and media, are expected to attend.

H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy, will welcome delegates with an opening keynote speech at the AGM.

“Dubai’s world-leading connectivity places it at the crossroads of the planet, making it the perfect venue for the airline industry’s leadership,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

“We look forward to hosting our industry colleagues in Dubai, Emirates’ home and hub. This city has established itself as a global aviation leader through visionary policies that recognize air transport’s economic significance. Last year, aviation contributed 27% to Dubai’s GDP, supporting $37 billion in gross value added. We hope delegates will experience Dubai’s dynamic atmosphere and renowned hospitality,” added Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline.

World Air Transport Summit

Following the AGM, the World Air Transport Summit (WATS) will address critical aviation issues. “Achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 will top the agenda, with discussions on accelerating progress through sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and carbon removals,” said Walsh. Other key topics include safety, financial sustainability, and industry challenges.

The CEO Insights Panel, moderated by CNN’s Richard Quest, will feature:

  • Vanessa Hudson, Group CEO and Managing Director, Qantas
  • Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline
  • Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines
  • Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic Airways

Key WATS topics include:

  • Challenges facing the airline industry with changing energy markets, geopolitical situations, and supply chain/trade patterns
  • The potential for AI in aviation
  • Advancing sustainability with SAF and carbon removals
  • Collaboration between aviation and tourism
  • Prospects for air cargo

A highlight will be the fifth edition of the IATA Diversity and Inclusion Awards, recognizing contributions to the 25by2025 initiative for improving gender balance in aviation.

Global Connectivity and Economic Impact

The program will underscore the benefits of global connectivity. Aviation directly employs 3 million people and supports 320 million jobs, accounting for about 10% of all economic activity. Air cargo delivers $8.3 trillion in trade annually, representing 35% of total trade.

For Dubai, Oxford Economics estimates that aviation contributed 27% to GDP, supporting $37 billion in gross value added in 2023. This is projected to increase to $53 billion by 2030, aligning with Dubai’s growth. Aviation also contributes to achieving 15 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
