Emirates has announced its collaboration with the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA), headquartered at the University of Cambridge, marking a significant milestone as the airline’s inaugural investment of USD $200 million from its Sustainability Fund towards research and development (R&D) initiatives aimed at mitigating the impact of fossil fuels in the aviation sector.
This partnership seeks to facilitate cooperation by supporting various climate impact tools developed by the AIA, enhancing their data modeling capabilities, and actively participating in forthcoming projects dedicated to reducing global aviation emissions.
The AIA, jointly led by the University of Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory and Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), comprises a diverse team of experts working on evidence-based systems, modeling techniques, visualizations, and specialized tools to assist policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public in understanding and accelerating pathways towards sustainable aviation.
Emirates joins esteemed industrial partners such as Boeing, Rolls-Royce, The Royal Air Force, IATA, 4Air, and Flexjet in supporting the AIA’s mission. The modeling capabilities of the AIA are a collaborative effort between the Bennett Innovation Lab and CISL, with a primary focus on expediting efforts towards achieving net-zero aviation. Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, expressed pride in Emirates’ involvement in the Aviation Impact Accelerator, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to actively contribute its expertise and insights. He highlighted the AIA’s potential to drive transformative changes in addressing critical gaps in new aviation technologies and solutions, ultimately reducing the long-term climate impact of commercial aviation.
