EMBRACING A SUSTAINABLE AND TECHNOLOGICAL APPROACH AT ROLLS ROYCE

What are the potential cost-saving  benefits of implementing digital  technology/solutions in business  aviation operations, and how do these  savings compare to initial investment  costs?

Implementing digital solutions that  facilities pre-emptive and predictive  maintenance across development,  testing and production ensures we can  determine the health and performance  of our engines, thereby preventing any  downtime.

The insight and data we glean from our  digital integration also enables us to  streamline process, enhance precision  engineering and accelerate innovation.  In the context of engine performance  optimisation, for example, we use digital  twins to simulate operating conditions,  allowing engineers to test different

parameters and configurations.  This predictive capability significantly  reduces the need for costly physical  testing, as potential issues can be  identified and addressed early in the  design phase. By optimising engine  performance virtually, we are not  only saving time and money but also  enhancing the overall efficiency and  reliability of our engines and systems.

How might AI-driven predictive  analytics improve decision-making  processes for business aviation  operators, such as maintenance  scheduling, fuel purchasing, and crew  assignment?

The convergence of product and  service are now inseparable thanks to  advancements in AI and our latest Engine  Health Monitoring (EHM) system  epitomises this seamless integration.

It allows us to collect data for about  10,000 parameters – from temperatures  to pressures, speeds, response times and  vibration levels.

And if our advanced algorithms find  an anomaly, we inform the aircraft’s  operator and proactively arrange all  necessary steps to avoid any service  disruptions.

And in business aviation, where aircraft  navigate diverse conditions, each  presenting unique challenges to engine  performance, data from the sensors  is combined with environmental data  and used as a basis for future engine  enhancements.

Through the utilisation of advanced  Engine Health Monitoring (EHM)  systems, we’ve we successfully averted  over 99 percent of potential missed trips, showcasing the reliability and precision  of our predictive maintenance strategies.

Furthermore, our average response time  for Aircraft on Ground (AOG) incidents  has reduced to less than 24 hours –  regardless of where in the world our  customers are.

EHM has played a pivotal role reaching these milestones, and with ongoing advancements in AI and monitoring capabilities, we are confident in our ability to inch closer to our ultimate goal of achieving 100 percent operational availability.

Considering both sustainability and cybersecurity implications, how can operators manage and mitigate potential risks associated with integrating AI into business aviation operations?

To manage and mitigate potential risks,  robust cybersecurity measures have  been implemented, particularly in the  two-way communications between the Engine Vibration and Health Monitoring  Unit (EVHMU) and Rolls-Royce.

Vice President Digital Services, Rolls-Royce

It is crucial to note these communications  are strictly with the monitoring unit  EVHMU and not directly with the  engine and its control system.

This design choice prevents any potential  cyber threats from compromising the  engine’s operation.

Furthermore, the use of AI in predictive  maintenance and operational efficiency  supports sustainability by optimising fuel  usage and reducing emissions through  more precise and timely interventions.

“By continuously monitoring and  analysing engine health data, operators  can proactively address maintenance  needs, thereby extending the lifespan  of components and minimising  environmental impact.”

Through these strategic measures,  we ensure that the integration of  AI enhances both the security and  sustainability of business aviation  operations.
