This week at the 2024 Singapore Airshow, Airbus showcased its A350-1000 in the flying display as part of its ongoing campaign to promote sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The manufacturer conducted a refueling demonstration at Changi Airport, introducing 12.8 tonnes of a 35 percent SAF blend into the A350, bringing the total to 21.8 tonnes for various demonstrations throughout the event.
Shell Aviation supplied the SAF, meeting International Sustainability & Carbon Certification EU requirements, and utilizing the HEFA-SPK pathway derived from cooking oil and tallow.
This demonstration is a key initiative in advancing the industry toward 100 percent SAF adoption, as Airbus remains committed to supporting and developing the SAF ecosystem, according to Hélène Burger, Airbus’s head of international cooperation and sustainability for the APAC region.
While the current availability of SAF is minimal compared to future needs, Burger emphasized the importance of ongoing education for regulators, fuel producers, distributors, and operators regarding the necessity and safety of SAF utilization.
All Airbus aircraft can operate with a blend of up to 50 percent SAF, and the company is actively conducting tests to achieve 100 percent SAF. Airbus has already conducted initial trials on the A380, with plans for comprehensive testing, including various weather conditions, to demonstrate the seamless integration of 100 percent SAF.
As part of its sustainability goals, Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100 percent SAF by 2030, contributing to the industry-wide objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. On average, SAF can reduce CO2 emissions by 80 percent over an aircraft’s lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels.
In addition to airshow displays, Airbus is facilitating its customers’ transition to SAF by delivering aircraft with a 5 percent SAF blend at no extra cost.
