Riyadh Air in Talks with Airbus and Boeing for Fleet Expansion

Saudi startup airline Riyadh Air is currently engaged in negotiations with Airbus and Boeing for a potential order of wide-body jets, aiming to bolster its fleet as it gears up to commence operations in the summer of 2025. Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air, disclosed to The National at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai that discussions are underway regarding a second wide-body aircraft order, with plans for a final decision by next year. Additionally, the airline has recently finalized an order for narrow-body jets, the details of which will be announced in the coming months.

Douglas emphasized the strategic importance of expanding the fleet to accommodate Riyadh Air’s ambitious growth plans, aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative. The airline aims to connect the Saudi capital with over 100 destinations by the end of the decade, contributing to the diversification of the kingdom’s economy and the development of its aviation sector.

Riyadh Air’s expansion strategy includes the acquisition of more than 200 aircraft within the first five years of operation, reflecting its commitment to rapid growth. While discussions with Airbus and Boeing continue, Douglas highlighted the importance of timely aircraft deliveries for the airline’s debut, emphasizing the absence of a backup plan due to its startup status. Acknowledging the supply chain challenges faced by both Airbus and Boeing, Douglas stressed the need for focused attention and assurance to ensure on-time delivery of aircraft. Despite industry-wide production issues, Douglas expressed confidence in Riyadh Air’s ability to navigate potential obstacles and receive its aircraft as scheduled.
